Weekly Challenge -Grace

During Life Group, we focused on Ephesians 2: 4-7.  This is a passage that ties together the reasoning and argument of Paul when he started the letter to Ephesus.  We are adopted and get the full inheritance.  We were worshiping the god of this world, but now worship the one true God.  We have been saved, raised up, and seated next to Jesus.
Why?   To demonstrate His mercy, love, grace, and kindness to us and to everyone in the future.

Grace is what separates Christianity from other religions.  The notion of God's love being free and with not strings attached, goes against our human instinct.  The Buddhist 8-fold path, the Hindu doctrine of Karma, the Jewish covenant, and the Muslim code of law, offers a way to earn approval.  Only Christianity says done instead of do.

My challenge for the week is to spend time researching the key differences between the religions.  Compare Christianity to Islam, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientology, etc.

Be intentional.

Weekly Challenge -Philippians 3:15-21

Life Group,
Paul told the early Christians (and us) to:
1. Continue maturing (pursue God the Son)
2. Watch Paul, imitate Paul, and follow the example of other growing believers
3. Avoid the practices of the enemies of the cross
4. Live as citizens of Heaven

Can people listen to you talk and know that you are a citizen of Heaven?
Can they observe your actions and recognize that "you are not from around here"?
Reminds me of the clip we discussed in LG...  How Ya Doin'.  Everyone in the bar knew that guy was not from around here!

Challenge: Identify who is watching you (your children, spouse, other family members, co-workers, younger believers, etc.) and adjust your living so you they can imitate you.

Be intentional this week.

Weekly Challenge: Philippians 3:1-14

Life Group Family and Friends:

Many people ask me what I like about our life group.  I tell them 2 things: 1. We are very real and don't hide behind masks of what we want others to see.  2. We have great discussion during LG.

Saturday evening was no different.  Thank you for the great discussion.

Paul was very real in describing the Judaizers.  Dogs, evil, mutilators.  (Tell us how you really feel Paul!).  But he did not want "works salvation" to muddy the water and force people to lose joy of a true free gift.  Remember how he compared all of his great works, which use to matter so much, as garbage, rubbish, dung, bodily excrement, dog poop, etc.  (might have used the Message version in there somewhere).

Paul is telling us not to be dumpster divers.  But to focus on "knowing Jesus".   During discussion we used the following to describe "knowing": learning, studying, journey, on going, pursue, what Travis D. said, closeness, relationship, confidence, intimate, and oneness.

My challenge to you this week is to focus on KNOWING your savior.  Do something different this week, talk to your spouse about what it means to know Jesus, pursue Jesus and enjoy the journey.

Be intentional.

Weekly Challenge -Security through the Trinity

LG family and friends:
You have been chosen, redeemed, and sealed!  Amen.  In our study of Ephesians 1:3-14, we learned:
  • God the Father chose you
  • God the Son redeemed you
  • God the Spirit sealed you

Your salvation is a done deal.  God's desire now is that you participate with Him.  He wants you to live a holy and blameless life, be intentional, and make a difference for Him today.  This goes back to our challenge last week regarding Ephesians 4.

The challenge this week is talk to someone this week about the security you have because of what the Trinity has done for you.  Describe the hope, joy, and peace you have and how your life is different.

People are naturally seeking.  As the news story we read in LG, some people will believe in Jediism to give them some type of higher power.  But they will not find security.

Be intentional.

Weekly Challenge -Emilie Quisenberry

Great job by Emilie on Saturday night.  God has provided us with many unique ways to encourage each other, build each other up, and challenge each other to love and good deeds (Hebrews 10 and 1 Thessalonians 5).  But one of my favorite channels of these actions is when we have members of our LG community teach and share with our group.

Go through the challenge from Emilie and be intentional in your purpose and in your roles.

Prayer and Social Media -Prayrful

LG Community;
It was a privilege to have Kevin and Tamara Fisher join us in class on Saturday.  As a Life Group community of believers we strive to encourage and teach individuals to develop the spiritual discipline of prayer.  It can be difficult to be intentional in prayer, track prayers, tell others how to pray for us, follow up with people you are praying for, know what has been answered, find time all throughout the day to pray, etc.

Kevin has developed the web app Prayrful to use technology to develop the spiritual discipline of prayer.  My challenge to you this week is to review the Prayrful sites below and to begin using the Prayrful tool.  For questions and comments, you can reach Kevin at kevin@fisherpride.com

Website:            http://prayrful.com/

Web App Sign-In:            http://app.prayrful.com/home/main

One of our first prayer requests is for one of our LG members to feel led to be our prayer coordinator.  This individual (or team) would lead the advancement of the use of Prayrful in our LG and to identify ways for our LG to spend time praying for each other and the LG.  Will you step up to lead this project?

Be intentional.

Weekly Challenge -Unstuck

Life Group Family & Friends:

We will start the class earlier this Saturday which will enable us to have more discussion time.  Nobody should feel that input is not wanted or that they will get kicked out of Life Group for sharing!  We strive to be an Ephesians 4 type of Life Group.  The equipping, learning, teaching, and maturing should be a great excitement to you.  Check out these verses from Ephesians chapter 4 and join our Life Group as we grow together...

2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

We began our 4-week video series called Unstuck.  Week 1 was Francis Chan.  Week 2 will be Lisa Harper.  Week 3 is Rich Stearns.  Week 4 is Mark Batterson.

As a member of Lake Pointe, you have been provided free access to the RightNow video library.

Link to RightNow Media

My challenge to you this week is to peruse the library, pick one video to watch (by yourself, as a couple, as a family, at dinner, etc.) and provide a quick review to our LG on Saturday.

Be intentional.

Life Group Weekly Challenge -Prayer

Life Group Family & Friends:

God has put together a great mix of people in our life group.  Authentic community is a way to describe our team of believers.  Real, honest, caring, loving, trusting, giving, joyful, carrying other’s burdens, growing, fun, etc. are all words that can describe our community.  Even with these “accomplishments” in our journey, we should always strive to go deeper to get more out of our time on earth.
As we discussed last night, the same can be said in our community with our Creator.  We get real with Him, have joy in live, but should always be intentional with going deeper in the relationship.

Our area of focus during LG was on prayer.  In “Praying for the Right Things,” John MacArthur says that we tend to be short-sighted and selfish in our prayers.

In his book, Experiencing God, Henry Blackaby says that we pray but then don’t tune in to see God working, putting people or distractions in your day.

I am a champion of both of those.  I pray for health, protection, thank you for this food, help me do this, keep me from that, make my life easier, remove the distractions, etc.

In The Prayer of George Muller (the story is at the end of this blog), George had confidence before God, loved others, and trusted God to meet all needs.

My challenge to you this week is to pray 5 times this week in a different way.  Over exaggerate, be completely different than your typical prayers, ask in order to receive, swim in the deep end of the prayer pool, be over-the-top in selflessness.  Then we can share with each other during Life Group what we learned.

Be intentional.
Travis

The Prayer of George Muller

For some of you the name George Muller is familiar.  Muller was of German stock, but lived in Bristol, England in the middle of the 19th century.  In Muller’s day there were no laws protecting children from the labor houses and factories.  Living and working conditions for street children were unimaginable.  Muller saw firsthand the needs of orphans in the city.  He and his wife, Mary, took seriously the admonition in James 1:27 which says:

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:   to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

George and Mary Muller decided that God was leading them to help provide for the orphans and street children of Bristol.  They were convinced that God would provide for every need.  Muller vowed to ask no man for money.  He even went as far as to say that he would not talk to people about the needs of his endeavor or even ask them to make it a matter of prayer.  Muller would ask God and God alone for the resources to complete the work.

The needs of the children were met at just the right time and sometimes at the last moment.  One morning as the children gathered for breakfast they were unaware that there was no food left in the orphanage.  As they waited for their morning meal George Muller calmly said, “Children, you know we must be in time for school.”  Lifting his hand he said, “Dear Father, we thank Thee for what Thou art going to give us to eat.”  As he finished praying there was a knock on the door and a baker entered.  Having sensed God urging him to do so, the baker had been up all night baking bread for the children.

Then there was a second knock at the door.  It was the milk man who announced that his milk wagon had broken down just outside the orphanage.  He gave the orphanage his cans of fresh milk so that his empty wagon could be repaired.

Weekly Challenge

Life Group Family & Friends:

This was a very enjoyable week for me while preparing this lesson on spiritual gifts.  We had 16 members of our LG complete the spiritual gifts survey, we had a men's prayer meeting before church, and it was incredible watching our life group discuss the purpose of spiritual gifts.  The realization of each of us being used by God for His glory was special to be a part of on Saturday.  We are the body, a special mural.

Paul gave us 3 purposes for spiritual gifts:
1.  Prepare God's people for works of service
2.  Build up the body of Christ
3.  So that we all might become mature believers

My challenge to you this week is to ask God to talk to you about your spiritual gifts.  Then listen.
Know that you are gifted.  Believe that you are different from the world.  Where can you serve?  What are your gifts? How is your life different because of these gifts?  How can you rely on God the Spirit?

Be Intentional.

Life Group Weekly Challenge

Life Group Family & Friends:

We discussed the sin in our life and how we are forgiven.  We are free from the penalty of sin, free from the power of sin, and at some point we will be free from the presence of sin.  We can use God’s example of forgiveness so we can forgive others.  Or maybe we need to forgive ourselves and give it all to the one who died for us.

In the Fireproof clip, Caleb was dealing with the lust of the eyes (boat) and lust of the flesh (porn). When he identified the “parasites” for what they were, he chose to honor God.  In the movie he took a drastic or dramatic measure by taking the computer outside and destroying it with a baseball bat.

My challenge to you this week is to determine what dramatic measure you need to take to deal with the sin in your life.  Maybe it involves an object, an addiction, an unhealthy relationship, etc.  Whatever it is take steps this week to live in the freedom of God’s forgiving grace.  Then follow his example for others.

Be Intentional.

Weekly Challenge -Romans 8

Life Group Family & Friends:

The last three weeks we covered Romans chapters 3, 6, and 8.  Our focus was on Justification, Sanctification, and Glorification.  We used the letter P to help us remember what the cross did for us as believers.

Justification -we are free from the Penalty of sin.
Sanctification -we are free from the Power of sin.
Glorification -we will be free from the Presence of sin.

My challenge to you this week is to delight in God.  Psalm 37:4 tells us to delight in the Lord and He will give us the desires of our heart.  Praise God for the freedom from the penalty, power, and presence of sin.  Tell your heavenly daddy thank you.

Be intentional this week.

Weekly Challenge -Colossians 3:18-21

Life Group community:

Thank you for the participation last night.  I thought the discussion was great.  The passage we studied last week (Colossians 3:18-21) is familiar to us and contains encouraging commands and truths as parents and for our marriage.

We looked up passages to see what the bible has to say about having harmony in the home because of God’s design for the family.  Having harmony in the home comes from having God at the center of our marriage and our family.  This is so very important because a transformed family advertises the Lord Jesus Christ like nothing else on earth.

Here are some of the phrases we wrote down from our discussion about how to have harmony in the home:

·         The husband is called to love his wife and treat them with respect.
·         We are to be honest in a loving way and maturing spiritually.
·         There is no place for bitterness in the home.
·         Our speech and actions should be God honoring.
·         The wife gets to “keep on submitting yourself” just as Christ submitted to the Father.
·         Genesis 3:16 says that women will want to control their husband, contrary to God’s design.
·         Be satisfied with your spouse.
·         Be refreshed by your spouse.
·         Be your spouse’s biggest cheerleader.
·         Be proud of your spouse and excited about them and by them.
·         Sex in marriage is required and good.
·         Teach your children the Word of God.
·         Teach your children to Love God.
·         Train your child in what is right and they will return to it.
·         Obedience teaches authority, discipline, responsibility, right and wrong, etc.

My challenge to you this week is to identify an area that you need to improve to enhance the harmony in your home.  Is it more family time?  Or more date nights?  Do you need to discuss expectations?  Or stop yelling or speaking harshly?  Can you be encouraging and uplifting?  Or celebrate your differences?

Identify it and put it into action.

Be intentional this week.
